Running Club

Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Hebrews 12:1-2

Who are we?
Since 1999 runners have been seen gathering on Saturday mornings at St. Andrew’s to run long workouts training for a variety of races from five kilometers through the marathon. The club has specialized in meeting the needs of the middle of the pack runners and new marathoners. In the past seven years over fifty new marathoners have achieved their goal of running a marathon. The focus of the group is to organize a weekly training run that motivates each runner to train regularly, stay in shape, improve fitness and enjoy each other’s company.

Tim Torgerson, one of the group’s original members says, “We have a great time doing something we love while enjoying each others company.” This combination of fun and discipline has attracted runners from as far as Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Fridley, Forest Lake and Woodbury. Every week ten to twenty runners show up to enjoy the camaraderie.

When and Where?
The club meets on Saturday mornings at 6:30 a.m. for bible study/7:00 am run in the summer (April through September) and 7:30 a.m. in winter (October through March). The club regularly meets near the South Link of the Great Hall building of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. Most of the runs are in the Mahtomedi, White Bear Lake, and Stillwater area. About five times per year the club will meet in St. Paul or Minneapolis to run along the Mississippi.

Who is welcomed?
“New runners are especially welcomed to begin working out with our group”, says co-leader, finisher of six marathons and Saint Andrew’s pastor, John Keller. While the club is an outreach program of Saint Andrew’s, participation is open to all in the community. “We have Lutherans, Catholics, Baptists and others in our group.”

What kind of pace groups does the club have?
On a typical Saturday the club will have at least three different pace groups for training:

  • 8:00-8:30 minute/mile group
  • 8:30-9:00 minute/mile group,
  • 9:30–10:30 minute/mile group
